Course Description: | In the Albanian cultural heritage the traditional domestic architecture occupies a very important role, since the '70s, since the State has provided for its protection with specific laws and through the proclamation of "cultural monuments" of all examples of historical and architectural value. The reasons for this thoughtful protection, conservation and restoration of traditional heritage are to be found in the Communist political ideology characterized by a strong nationalist component and an atheist that pointed to the elimination (or transformation) of buildings and of religious symbols. However, the consequences are significant and important as they have allowed the survival of traditional housing types, limiting or freezing the transformative process in which these buildings are subject to their nature. This allowed scholars to reconstruct the typological processes and identified five urban types present on Albanian territory. |
Course Objectives: | To familiarize the students with the dwelling typologies in Albania and the techniques of analyzing them. To benefit from the architectural characteristics of the traditional dwellings. Learning about the use of space, craft and materials in traditional dwellings. |
